International Gaming Standards Association Forms Cyber Resiliency Committee Amidst Rising Cybersecurity Concerns

The International Gaming Standards Association (IGSA) has taken a significant step in addressing the escalating cybersecurity challenges faced by the gaming industry. IGSA has announced the establishment of a new Cyber Resiliency Committee dedicated to defining cybersecurity standards, risk management practices, and governance controls for casino operators and the broader gaming ecosystem. This move comes in the wake of recent high-profile cyberattacks targeting casino operators, including MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment.

The Growing Threat:

The formation of the Cyber Resiliency Committee is a response to the alarming increase in cyber threats and attacks targeting the gaming industry. The recent incidents involving MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment underscore the urgency of bolstering cybersecurity measures. Caesars Entertainment reportedly paid a $30 million ransom to prevent hackers from exposing stolen data from its loyalty program database.

Industry Collaboration:

IGSA’s Platinum and Gold members, including Aristocrat Technologies and Light & Wonder, have rallied together to initiate this cybersecurity-focused committee. Recognizing the need for industry-wide collaboration, these companies are taking proactive steps to address cybersecurity as a top priority. The committee aims to offer guidance, support, and ready-to-use standards to enhance cyber resilience across the gaming sector.

Leadership and Commitment:

Earle G Hall, Chairman of IGSA and CEO of AXES.ai, expressed his appreciation for the swift response from IGSA members to tackle cybersecurity challenges. He highlighted the importance of cybersecurity not only in protecting operators but also in safeguarding the entire gaming industry. Peter DeRaedt, President of IGSA, emphasized the association’s commitment to leading efforts in creating cybersecurity standards to fortify the industry against cyber threats.

The formation of IGSA’s Cyber Resiliency Committee signals a critical development in the gaming industry’s response to cybersecurity threats. By setting standards and best practices, this committee aims to equip casino operators and the wider ecosystem with the tools needed to defend against cyberattacks. As cyber threats continue to evolve, IGSA’s proactive approach is poised to enhance the industry’s resilience and ensure the security of critical gaming operations.
