The Stronach Group, a prominent real estate development company and owner of Golden Gate Fields, has submitted a request to the California Horse Racing Board for an extension of the track’s closing date. They are seeking to extend operations until June 30, 2024, to host one final series of races at this iconic venue.
A Final Farewell:
Aiden Butler, CEO of Stronach-funded 1/ST Racing & Gaming, expressed their satisfaction in reaching a solution with industry stakeholders to keep Golden Gate Fields operational for an additional and ultimate racing meet. This decision comes after the initial announcement in July to close the track by the end of 2023 and consolidate racing activities in Southern California.
Transition Plans:
As part of their consolidation strategy, horses from Golden Gate Fields will be relocated from Northern California to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia and San Luis Rey Downs. This move aims to streamline operations while preserving the racing legacy.
Investment in Santa Anita Park:
Notably, The Stronach Group also revealed plans to invest $32 million in upgrading Santa Anita Park. The renovations are scheduled to commence after the Breeders’ Cup in November and be completed in time for the winter-spring meet starting on December 26.
Key Investments Include:
Barn and Facilities Upgrades: An allocation of $23.2 million will enhance the barns, living quarters, and other essential backside facilities at Santa Anita Park.
Synthetic Training Track: An investment of $4.5 million will fund the construction of a new synthetic training track.
One-Mile Turf Chute: A sum of $2.5 million is dedicated to creating a new one-mile turf chute.
Equine Swimming Pool: An equine swimming pool worth $500,000 will be introduced.
Support for California Breeders: A $1 million fund will assist California breeders and aid in the smooth relocation of horses from Golden Gate Fields.
Golden Gate Fields, with its rich history in horse racing, is set to bid farewell with one last racing season, pending approval from the California Horse Racing Board. The Stronach Group’s commitment to revitalizing Santa Anita Park reflects its dedication to the sport’s future while preserving its heritage. These strategic decisions signify a new chapter in California’s horse racing landscape, balancing tradition and modernization.
