Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, the Emirati Politician and Crown Prince of Dubai, recently presided over a meeting with the Higher Committee for Future Technology and Digital Economy to unveil the Dubai Programme for Gaming 2023. The ambitious initiative seeks to position Dubai among the top 10 cities in the global gaming industry. The Crown Prince aims to drive the growth of the gaming sector by creating 30,000 jobs over the next decade and boosting its contribution to Dubai’s gross domestic product (GDP) by $1 billion.
Dubai’s Ongoing Focus on Gaming:
Dubai has been proactively working towards becoming a hub for gaming innovation, with a keen interest in expanding into the gambling sector. Collaborative efforts with the neighboring emirate, Abu Dhabi, have aimed at developing casinos and gaming operations. A significant milestone in this journey was the announcement last year by Wynn Resorts to establish a $2 billion resort in the UAE, signaling the region’s readiness to embrace the gaming industry.
Jim Murren’s Role in Advancing Gaming:
Earlier this year, Jim Murren, former Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International, assumed the position of Chair at the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (UAE). Murren’s appointment underscores the UAE’s commitment to establishing itself as a prominent player in the global gaming industry.
Dubai’s Metaverse Strategy:
In addition to the gaming program, the meeting also included the approval of three new projects as part of the Dubai Metaverse Strategy. Dubai has been actively working towards becoming the “most digitally advanced city in the world” by hosting various Web3 and blockchain events. These initiatives are designed to stimulate industry growth and attract investments from global businesses.
Challenges in Introducing Casinos:
Although Dubai is making significant strides in gaming and digital technology, casinos and gambling operations have not yet been established in the city due to the nation’s adherence to Muslim practices. However, exceptions appear to be on the horizon, as evidenced by the aforementioned Wynn Resorts plan and the region’s growing interest in the gaming sector.
Dubai’s launch of the Dubai Programme for Gaming 2023, spearheaded by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, underscores the emirate’s commitment to becoming a major player in the global gaming industry. With the goal of creating thousands of jobs and significantly contributing to Dubai’s GDP, the city is positioning itself as a key player in the gaming sector. While challenges remain, Dubai’s focus on gaming and digital advancement demonstrates its determination to lead in these evolving industries.
