Delaware Sports Betting Handle Declines in April; Online Gaming Stays Steady

Delaware’s sports betting market witnessed a decrease in handle during the month of April, marking the lowest monthly total in eight months. In contrast, online gaming remained relatively stable. This report delves into the key figures and trends in Delaware’s sports betting and online gaming sectors for the month of April.

Decline in Sports Betting Handle:
Delaware’s sports betting handle for April amounted to $3.4 million, a 10 percent decline from the $4.2 million reported in April 2022. Additionally, it was only slightly behind the $3.5 million handle recorded in March of the same year. This marked a significant drop, making it the lowest monthly total in eight months. These numbers indicate a downward trend in sports betting activity within the state.

Sports Betting Revenue:
Despite the decline in handle, sports betting revenue showed a different trend. It reached $374,568, reflecting a 19.2 percent year-on-year increase. However, there was a notable 31.2 percent drop from the $544,385 in revenue reported for March. Delaware Park continued to be the leading operator, generating $195,226 in revenue from $1.9 million in wagers. Bally’s Dover followed with $93,506 from $873,791, and Harrington Raceway with $46,728 in revenue from $458,575.

Online Gaming Handle and Revenue:
Delaware’s online gaming sector remained relatively stable in April. The online gaming handle reached $39.5 million, showing a moderate 6.2 percent year-on-year increase. While this figure decreased by 4.8 percent from March when the handle was $41.5 million, it still displayed resilience. Players wagered $11.4 million on table games and $24.1 million on video lottery.

Revenue from online gaming amounted to $1.3 million, marking an 8.3 percent year-on-year increase. However, it witnessed a 7.1 percent decline from the $1.4 million reported in March. The breakdown of this revenue showed that $1.1 million came from video lottery games, $195,118 from table games, and $44,540 from poker rake and fees.

Operator Performance in Online Gaming:
Among Delaware’s operators in the online gaming sector, Bally’s Dover stood out with $457,240 in revenue from $10.6 million in bets. Delaware Park followed closely, reporting $444,955 in revenue from $20.7 million in bets, and Harrington Raceway with $391,510 in revenue from $8.1 million.

Delaware’s sports betting market experienced a decline in April, with the handle reaching an eight-month low. While sports betting revenue showed year-on-year growth, it fell significantly from the previous month. On the other hand, online gaming maintained stability, with both handle and revenue remaining relatively steady. The resilience of Delaware’s online gaming sector amidst fluctuations in sports betting highlights its importance in the state’s overall gaming landscape.
