Illinois casinos reported adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of $122 million for May, marking a 4.7% decrease compared to April 2023. However, the figures reflect a 4.7% increase when compared to May 2022. The Illinois Gaming Board’s data also shows tax collection of over $23.91 million, with the local share amounting to $6.97 million.
Casino Performance:
In May, Casino in Des Plaines was the sole gaming venue to surpass its April revenue, recording $46.64 million. Other casinos in the state, such as Grand Victoria Casino, Harrah’s Joliet Casino & Hotel, Hollywood Casino Aurora, Hollywood Casino Joliet, and DraftKings at Casino Queen, reported varying revenue figures.
Casino Attendance:
The Illinois Gaming Board recently reported that casino attendance in the state is at its highest level since 2018. During the first four months of 2023, nearly 3.4 million visitors graced the state’s casinos, closely trailing the 3.5 million recorded during the same period in 2018.
Extension of Sports Betting Limits:
In May, Illinois lawmakers decided to extend the limits on sports wagering for games involving in-state colleges for an additional year. This means that sports betting enthusiasts in Illinois can continue placing bets on in-state college teams at Illinois sportsbooks, excluding online platforms. The extension is in place until July 1, 2024.
Governor’s Decision:
The Senate passed the extension with a unanimous vote of 54-0, adding the amendment to a larger bill (SB 84) focused on amending environmental laws. Now, the bill awaits transmission, and Governor JB Pritzker has 60 days to veto it, or it will become law.
While Illinois casinos experienced a slight revenue dip in May compared to the previous month, the figures indicate growth compared to the same period last year. The decision to extend the limits on sports wagering involving in-state colleges adds an interesting dimension to the state’s gambling landscape. It will be interesting to see how these developments impact the Illinois gambling industry in the months ahead.
