Western Sydney Wanderers FC, Macarthur FC, and Cricket NSW have taken a stand against the gambling industry by refusing to enter into partnerships or commercial agreements with companies linked to gambling. These sports teams are part of the “Reclaim the Game” initiative, which aims to reject sports betting advertising and promote gambling awareness among supporters. With the support of leading sports organizations in New South Wales, the initiative is gaining momentum and making a positive impact.
Growing Support for Reclaim the Game:
The Reclaim the Game initiative has received strong backing from various sports teams and organizations in New South Wales. Currently, 14 teams from five different codes have committed to turning down sports betting sponsorships and prioritizing gambling awareness and education. This collective effort reflects the recognition among sporting franchises of the importance of eliminating intrusive sports betting ads and preserving the pure enjoyment of the game.
Addressing the Impact of Sports Betting:
Research has shown that a significant number of young people are exposed to gambling advertising during sports events, with nearly half of 12-17-year-olds witnessing such ads on television weekly. Moreover, approximately one in three young individuals perceive betting on sports as normal. The Reclaim the Game initiative aims to counter these trends and refocus on the essence of sports: watching, enjoying, and cheering for teams without the interference of gambling advertisements.
Extended Partnerships and Commitments:
Western Sydney Wanderers FC, an early supporter of Reclaim the Game, has extended its partnership for two additional seasons. Macarthur FC has also extended its commitment by one season, reinforcing the importance of raising awareness about the impact of sports betting in professional sports. Both clubs are dedicated to promoting the initiative across their teams, including their A-League Women’s team.
Cricket NSW has similarly extended its support for the initiative by two more seasons. The rejection of sports betting advertising will be implemented during home games of the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder in the men’s and women’s Big Bash teams, as well as their state teams NSW Blues and NSW Breakers.
Effecting Change and Promoting Education:
By aligning with the Office of Responsible Gambling, Cricket NSW has actively contributed to changing community attitudes towards betting on sports. The organization takes pride in playing an essential role in educating children that gambling should not be associated with sport and that betting on sports is not a wise choice. Cricket NSW acknowledges the adverse impact of constant sports betting advertising, particularly on young men and their families. The ongoing commitment of Cricket NSW aims to counter these effects and promote a healthier sporting environment.
The rejection of partnerships with the gambling industry by Western Sydney Wanderers FC, Macarthur FC, and Cricket NSW demonstrates a collective effort to reclaim the purity of sports and protect supporters from intrusive sports betting advertisements. The Reclaim the Game initiative has gained substantial support, with multiple sports teams committing to promoting gambling awareness and education. This collaborative approach aims to shift community attitudes and reduce the influence of gambling on young individuals. By taking a stand against the gambling industry, these sports organizations are working towards creating a safer and more enjoyable sporting environment for all.
