In the latest report from the Online Gambling Barometer, an annual survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of the Netherlands Online Gambling Association (NOGA), key insights into the Dutch online gambling landscape have emerged.
Stable Participation Rates and Shift towards Licensed Operators
The report reveals that online gambling participation among Dutch adults has remained consistent over the past year, with approximately 11% of the adult population engaging in online gambling in the preceding 12 months. This figure remains unchanged from the previous year, indicating a stable level of interest in online gaming.
Notably, of those who gambled online after October 1, 2021, a significant 78% opted to use licensed operators. This trend signals a positive shift towards a safer and more regulated gambling environment. According to NOGA, this indicates that individuals who were already engaging in online gambling are increasingly choosing legal platforms.
Decline in Illegal Gambling Sites and Public Perception
A noteworthy finding is the drastic reduction in visits to illegal gambling sites. This decline is attributed to increased awareness among players regarding the risks associated with unlicensed operators. However, a significant proportion (70%) of those who continue to use illegal sites lack the knowledge to differentiate between licensed and unlicensed providers.
Moreover, the report highlights a growing exposure to gambling advertisements among Dutch citizens. Despite this exposure, a substantial portion of the population supports stringent restrictions on gambling-related advertising.
Channelling Players towards Legal Operators
NOGA’s Director, Peter-Paul de Goeij, emphasizes the importance of continuing efforts to steer players towards licensed gambling options. With 78% of online gamblers opting for legal platforms, there is a clear trend towards regulatory compliance. The focus now lies on converting the remaining 22% of illegal gamblers to licensed providers.
Protecting vulnerable groups from gambling-related harm is a key priority highlighted in the report. Approximately 5% of the Dutch population, rising to 8% among young adults, are identified as at-risk individuals for gambling problems. NOGA stresses the necessity of directing these individuals towards licensed operators to mitigate the inherent risks associated with gambling.
Towards a Safer Gambling Environment
The insights from the 2022 Online Gambling Barometer underscore the ongoing evolution of the Dutch online gambling market. The stability in participation rates coupled with a significant shift towards licensed operators signifies progress in creating a safer and more responsible gambling environment.
Moving forward, there is a clear imperative to enhance public awareness regarding licensed gambling options and to strengthen measures that protect vulnerable demographics from the adverse effects of excessive gambling. With continued efforts towards regulatory compliance and public education, the Netherlands can advance towards a more sustainable and safer online gambling landscape.
This year’s findings from the Online Gambling Barometer serve as a valuable compass for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and advocates working towards promoting responsible gambling practices in the Netherlands.
