In April 2024, Macau’s hotel industry witnessed a significant surge in occupancy rates, coupled with a remarkable increase in tourist arrivals.
Occupancy Rates:
Macau’s hotels experienced a robust occupancy rate of 83.3% in April, marking a 4.0 percentage point increase from the previous year. This growth trend was consistent with the occupancy rate recorded in March, which stood at 83.5%. Notably, 5-star hotels led the pack with an occupancy rate of 85.1%, followed by 4-star hotels at 79.6% and 3-star hotels at 81.1%.
Visitor Demographics:
The influx of tourists contributed significantly to the surge in occupancy rates. The total number of hotel guests increased by 5.6% year-on-year to reach 1,159,000. Mainland China emerged as the primary source of tourists, with a notable 11.8% increase in the number of guests. Conversely, there was a decline in visitors from Hong Kong by 35.0%. However, there was a substantial increase in guests from Taiwan (96.1%) and South Korea (245%).
Average Length of Stay:
Despite the surge in tourist arrivals, the average length of stay remained stable at 1.6 nights, reflecting a slight increase compared to April 2019. This stability suggests that despite the increased influx of tourists, visitors are spending a consistent amount of time exploring Macau’s offerings.
Year-to-Date Performance:
The hotel industry’s performance for the first four months of 2024 exhibited a remarkable growth trajectory. The average occupancy rate surged by 8.4 percentage points year-on-year to reach 84.5%. Concurrently, the total number of guests increased by an impressive 29.8% year-on-year, reaching 4,939,000. These figures underscore the sustained momentum and resilience of Macau’s tourism sector.
Package Tours:
The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) also provided insights into the performance of package tours in April 2024. Visitor arrivals on package tours experienced a staggering 142% year-on-year growth, totaling 216,000. Mainland China accounted for the lion’s share of tour visitors, with a remarkable 123.3% increase. Moreover, international visitor arrivals on package tours witnessed an exponential growth of 980%, with significant contributions from South Korea and Malaysia.
Year-to-Date Package Tour Performance:
The data for the first four months of 2024 paints a compelling picture of the resurgence in package tours. A total of 720,000 visitors arrived on package tours during this period, reflecting a remarkable 258% year-on-year increase. Notably, mainland China remained the primary source market, contributing to the majority of package tour arrivals.
