Macau Hotel Industry Report: A Surge in Occupancy and Tourist Arrivals in April 2024

In April 2024, Macau’s hotel industry witnessed a significant surge in occupancy rates, coupled with a remarkable increase in tourist arrivals.

Occupancy Rates:
Macau’s hotels experienced a robust occupancy rate of 83.3% in April, marking a 4.0 percentage point increase from the previous year. This growth trend was consistent with the occupancy rate recorded in March, which stood at 83.5%. Notably, 5-star hotels led the pack with an occupancy rate of 85.1%, followed by 4-star hotels at 79.6% and 3-star hotels at 81.1%.

Visitor Demographics:
The influx of tourists contributed significantly to the surge in occupancy rates. The total number of hotel guests increased by 5.6% year-on-year to reach 1,159,000. Mainland China emerged as the primary source of tourists, with a notable 11.8% increase in the number of guests. Conversely, there was a decline in visitors from Hong Kong by 35.0%. However, there was a substantial increase in guests from Taiwan (96.1%) and South Korea (245%).

Average Length of Stay:
Despite the surge in tourist arrivals, the average length of stay remained stable at 1.6 nights, reflecting a slight increase compared to April 2019. This stability suggests that despite the increased influx of tourists, visitors are spending a consistent amount of time exploring Macau’s offerings.

Year-to-Date Performance:
The hotel industry’s performance for the first four months of 2024 exhibited a remarkable growth trajectory. The average occupancy rate surged by 8.4 percentage points year-on-year to reach 84.5%. Concurrently, the total number of guests increased by an impressive 29.8% year-on-year, reaching 4,939,000. These figures underscore the sustained momentum and resilience of Macau’s tourism sector.

Package Tours:
The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) also provided insights into the performance of package tours in April 2024. Visitor arrivals on package tours experienced a staggering 142% year-on-year growth, totaling 216,000. Mainland China accounted for the lion’s share of tour visitors, with a remarkable 123.3% increase. Moreover, international visitor arrivals on package tours witnessed an exponential growth of 980%, with significant contributions from South Korea and Malaysia.

Year-to-Date Package Tour Performance:
The data for the first four months of 2024 paints a compelling picture of the resurgence in package tours. A total of 720,000 visitors arrived on package tours during this period, reflecting a remarkable 258% year-on-year increase. Notably, mainland China remained the primary source market, contributing to the majority of package tour arrivals.

The hotel industry in Macau experienced a remarkable surge in occupancy rates and tourist arrivals in April 2024. The robust performance, coupled with the resurgence in package tours, bodes well for the region’s tourism sector. As Macau continues to position itself as a premier tourist destination, sustaining this growth momentum will be crucial in driving economic prosperity and enhancing the overall visitor experience.
