Maryland’s Sports Betting Landscape Gains Momentum with MLGCC Approvals

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) has taken significant steps in shaping the state’s sports betting landscape by approving the qualifications of several facility and mobile sports betting applicants. This move comes as Maryland’s mobile sports betting market opened on November 23, marking a new era for sports wagering in the state.

Qualification Approvals:
The MLGCC has greenlit the qualifications of three sports wagering facility applicants and two mobile sports betting applicants. These entities are now poised to be considered for license awards during the upcoming meeting of the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) on February 15.

Expanding Mobile Sports Betting:
Maryland’s mobile sports betting market has gained traction since its launch on November 23. SWARC’s recent approval of diversity plans for ten sports wagering licensees reflects the state’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive sports betting industry. As of now, seven mobile sportsbooks are already operational in Maryland.

Qualified Facility Applicants:
The three businesses that have been deemed qualified for sports wagering facility licenses are Kathe P. Hospitality (operating Michael’s on the South River in Riva, Anne Arundel County), Canton Gaming – Canton (running The Greene Turtle Sports Bar & Grille in Canton, Baltimore City), and Canton Gaming – Towson (managing The Greene Turtle Sports Bar & Grille in Towson, Baltimore County). Notably, Canton Gaming has partnered with Parx Interactive Maryland (BetParx) as its operator partner for both locations.

Mobile Sports Betting Operator Approval:
The MLGCC has also granted qualifications to SBOpco (Super Book) as both a sports wagering facility operator and an online sports wagering operator. This move showcases the diverse players entering Maryland’s sports betting market.

Prospects and Revenue Estimates:
Maryland Lottery Director John Martin envisions a thriving sports betting landscape by the start of the 2023 NFL season, with up to 21 online sports betting operators and 15 to 20 retail operators going live in the state. Governor Larry Hogan’s optimistic revenue projections indicate the potential for $30 million in revenue in 2023 and nearly $100 million by 2027.

Fanatics’ Inauguration of a Retail Sportsbook:
Adding to the excitement, Fanatics Betting and Gaming, in partnership with the Washington Commanders, has inaugurated a retail sportsbook within the NFL FedExField Stadium in Maryland. The 5,000-square-foot space boasts eight betting windows, 21 self-service betting kiosks, impressive LED video walls, TV monitors, and a full-service restaurant. This venture marks another milestone in Maryland’s burgeoning sports betting journey.

The MLGCC’s recent approvals signal a dynamic progression in Maryland’s sports betting arena. With the mobile sports betting market already in motion and various entities receiving qualifications, Maryland’s wagering landscape is poised for growth and innovation. As operators and enthusiasts anticipate the developments ahead, the state’s commitment to responsible gaming and diverse participation underscores its dedication to fostering a vibrant and thriving sports betting industry.
