The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has granted approval to 888 Holdings’ VHL Michigan to serve as the new platform provider for online casino gaming for the Hannahville Indian Community. The community will offer the online casino platform under the Sports Illustrated brand. This decision comes after the original platform provider, Twin Spires, announced its plans to shut down its online business.
Hannahville Indian Community’s Partnership with 888 Holdings:
The Hannahville Indian Community, which operates the Island Resort & Casino in Harris, Michigan, entered into a partnership with 888 Holdings after the exit of its previous platform provider. The tribe was one of the initial 10 licensees authorized by the MGCB to launch both online gaming and online sports betting in Michigan on January 22, 2021.
The MGCB’s Response:
Henry Williams, Executive Director of the MGCB, expressed well wishes for the Hannahville tribe in its renewed endeavor to offer customers online gaming and sports betting. He noted the tribe’s ability to provide both forms of entertainment in compliance with Michigan regulations.
Michigan’s Growing Online Gaming and Betting Industry:
In 2022, Michigan’s online gaming and sports betting industry demonstrated significant growth. Gross receipts from commercial and tribal internet casino gaming and internet sports betting operators reached $1.98 billion, marking a substantial 41 percent increase from the $1.4 billion recorded in 2021.
Breakdown of Revenue:
According to the MGCB, internet casino gaming contributed $1.58 billion in gross receipts, while internet sports betting generated $399.58 million. When combined, the adjusted gross receipts from internet gaming and sports betting for 2022 amounted to $1.65 billion, indicating a remarkable 47.8 percent surge compared to the $1.1 billion achieved in 2021.
Leadership Changes at 888 Holdings:
In recent news, 888 Holdings announced the departure of CEO Itai Pazner, who had served in the position for slightly over four years. The company, known for acquiring William Hill’s European business in the previous year, is currently in search of a successor. As part of the transition, Non-Executive Chair Lord Mendelsohn will take on the role of Executive Chair, while Andria Vidler has been appointed Chair of the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Committee.
The partnership between 888 Holdings and the Hannahville Indian Community underscores the dynamic landscape of online gaming and sports betting in Michigan. The state’s robust growth in online gaming and betting revenue highlights the popularity of these activities among consumers. As Michigan’s industry continues to evolve, regulatory compliance and responsible gaming practices remain essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
