Macau Jockey Club’s Future Uncertain as Government Stresses Franchise Obligations

In an environment of uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of the Macau Jockey Club (MJC), Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong emphasized the need for franchise operators to adhere strictly to legal obligations and franchise contract requirements during a media briefing on Wednesday.

The MJC recently announced that its 2023/2024 season is set to commence on September 29, 2023, following government approval. This development temporarily alleviates concerns that the season might be canceled altogether. Earlier reports had raised doubts about MJC’s ability to fulfill facility upgrade promises made when it was granted a 24-year concession extension in February 2018.

Secretary Lei refrained from commenting on market rumors but emphasized that the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) would enforce regulatory measures related to franchise contracts in accordance with the law.

Despite the announcement of season dates, Inside Asian Gaming reported lingering concerns about MJC’s capacity to stage a full fixture due to potential shortages in the club’s horse inventory. This concern arises from the recent blocking of a shipment of 30 horses, further complicating the club’s operational outlook.
