The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is taking a proactive stance against illegal gaming activities in the state. MGCB’s Executive Director, Henry Williams, recently held a meeting with Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley and State Representative Cynthia Neeley to strategize on ways to tackle the issue of illegal gaming. The discussions centered on the impact of unlawful storefront casinos on residents and the need to uphold the reputation of regulated gaming in the state.
Addressing Illegal Gaming:
During their meeting, the officials emphasized the negative consequences of illegal gaming establishments, particularly on public safety and the potential for other criminal activities to flourish in their vicinity. They discussed the importance of safeguarding the community from the predatory operations of illegal gambling venues.
Promoting Legal, Regulated Gaming:
The gathering coincided with the “Legal, Regulated Gaming Protects Players” week, designated by the American Gaming Association (AGA). It served as a platform for highlighting the significance of regulated gaming in safeguarding players’ interests and ensuring fair play.

Director Henry Williams expressed the importance of fostering a collaborative relationship with local leaders to gain insights into the challenges posed by illegal gaming from their perspective. He affirmed his commitment to working with Mayor Neeley to prevent the reopening of previously cited illegal gaming establishments and minimize risks to the community.

Mayor Sheldon Neeley acknowledged the threat posed by illegal gaming operations and thanked Director Williams for his partnership in addressing this issue. He stressed the importance of protecting Flint residents from harm caused by these unwelcome activities.
Recent Seizure:
Notably, just a week before this meeting, the MGCB seized 50 gambling devices and $13,260 in suspected gambling proceeds from an alleged illegal storefront casino operating under the name “The Flint Arcade.” This location had previously been subjected to a raid in August 2022 during an investigation into illegal gambling.
Enforcement Statistics:
The MGCB’s efforts to combat illegal gaming have led to the seizure of 1,195 illegal machines and $470,401.98 in suspected proceeds from January 2015 through July 2023. Additionally, since November 2022, cease-and-desist letters have been issued to 48 locations, involving 105 illegal machines.
Positive Trends in Michigan Gaming:
In addition to their focus on combating illegal gaming, Michigan’s gaming industry has reported positive trends. In July, the state’s commercial and tribal operators reported a combined $176.1 million in gross revenue from Internet casino gaming and sports betting, marking a 4% increase compared to the previous month.
