The Swedish Police Authority, known as Polismyndigheten, has issued a statement in response to its investigation into corruption within the realms of sports and sports betting. While Sweden has traditionally enjoyed low levels of corruption in sports, the report highlights a concerning uptick in both national and international match-fixing incidents.
A Disturbing Trend
These illicit activities are being orchestrated by a combination of players, referees, and criminal organizations working in concert to reap substantial profits. The acts of corruption encompass a range of transgressions, including match-fixing, unethical betting practices, money laundering, and other illegal activities associated with sports betting.
Per Engström, Head of Section at the Swedish Police’s National Operations Department, noted, “Sport is synonymous with integrity, team spirit, and fair play. However, it also involves substantial sums of money, which piques the interest of criminal elements and presents lucrative opportunities.”
Football at the Epicenter
The report highlights football as the sport most vulnerable to corruption, with football’s growing popularity adding to its risk profile. Of particular concern is women’s football, which could face increasing match-fixing pressures due to its rising popularity.
Engström stressed the need for a collective effort to combat this issue: “It’s evident to us within the Swedish police that criminal actors seek to exploit various arenas where financial gains are possible. We are conducting ongoing investigations, but addressing this issue in society requires a collaborative approach at all levels.”
Vulnerable Communities
The report identifies young individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds as the most susceptible to engaging in criminal activities related to sporting corruption, particularly those with a history of gambling addiction.
In response, the Swedish Police Authority is actively working to tackle the root causes of the issue. They recognize the importance of preventative measures to protect the integrity of sports and prevent vulnerable individuals from falling into illicit activities associated with corruption.
