The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) is set to make a crucial decision next week regarding potential penalties against MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor. The casinos have come under scrutiny for accepting illegal bets on in-state collegiate sports. Virtual hearings scheduled for April 14 will determine the course of action.
Identifying the Issue:
The MGC’s investigation revealed that over $1,200 in wagers were placed on two Harvard University basketball games in February. The crux of the matter lies in the fact that state law in Massachusetts prohibits betting on collegiate sports within the state’s borders. However, an error occurred when Harvard was incorrectly listed as an out-of-state institution.
Kathleen Kramer, Senior Enforcement Counsel at MGC, explained that Harvard’s misclassification arose when it was added to a “blacklist document” under another state’s requirement of “no collegiate sports,” mistakenly designating it as being located in Connecticut.
Corrective Measures and Accountability:
In response to the issue, BetMGM, the operator of the sportsbook at MGM Springfield, promptly rectified the designation. BetMGM took corrective action by verifying that all bets related to Massachusetts collegiate sports are appropriately restricted.
Furthermore, BetMGM has put forward a plan to conduct a daily audit of all bets offered to ensure that there are no restrictions before opening the sportsbook or making wagering options available for the day. This commitment to compliance aims to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Examining Encore Boston Harbor:
The MGC will also delve into the matter of illegal wagers placed at Encore Boston Harbor. It has been reported that a system glitch allowed customers to place bets on a Boston College women’s basketball game.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s upcoming hearings signify a commitment to upholding the integrity of the state’s sports betting regulations. As the investigation unfolds, it highlights the importance of accurate data and meticulous oversight in the betting industry. The actions taken by BetMGM to address the issue and enhance compliance procedures serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to maintain fair and legal betting practices in the state.
