The Michigan Legislature has reached an agreement on the state’s Fiscal Year 2024 budget, allocating $50.7 million to the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB). Notably, $3 million of ongoing annual funding is designated to support the continuation of the MGCB’s “Don’t Regret the Bet” responsible gaming messaging campaign, which was launched earlier this year. This funding demonstrates the state’s commitment to promoting responsible gaming practices and ensuring the integrity of the gaming industry.
Budget Allocations for MGCB:
The Michigan Legislature’s budget agreement for FY 2024 includes several crucial allocations for the Michigan Gaming Control Board:
“Don’t Regret the Bet” Campaign:
An ongoing, annual funding of $3 million is earmarked to support the MGCB’s responsible gaming messaging campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness about responsible gaming practices and foster a safe gaming environment for Michigan residents.
Support for New Gaming Programs:
$2.2 million and 16 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff positions are allocated to support the implementation of new gaming programs. This funding reinforces the MGCB’s ability to adapt to evolving gaming trends and efficiently regulate emerging gaming initiatives.
Accounts Receivable System:
$2 million in one-time funding is designated to create an integrated accounts receivable system. This system will seamlessly connect with the existing internal agency database and the state’s financial system, SIGMA. The investment aims to enhance operational efficiency and financial management.
Compensation for MGCB Board Members:
$63,000 is allocated to begin compensating MGCB board members. Currently serving on an unpaid volunteer basis, board members will now receive compensation for attending board meetings. This measure recognizes their valuable contributions and commitment to the regulatory process.
Appreciation from MGCB Executive Director:
Henry Williams, MGCB Executive Director, expressed appreciation for the bipartisan support from Governor Whitmer and the Legislature. He emphasized the importance of a well-funded gaming control agency in ensuring fair, honest gaming, preventing fraud, addressing problem gambling, and supporting the state’s growing gaming economy.
The Michigan Legislature’s budget agreement for FY 2024 reflects a comprehensive commitment to responsible gaming practices, regulatory efficiency, and the growth of the gaming industry. The specific allocations for the Michigan Gaming Control Board underscore the state’s dedication to fostering a secure and transparent gaming environment while addressing emerging challenges and opportunities in the dynamic gaming landscape.
