Macau’s Secretary for Security, Wong Sio Chak, recently disclosed a detailed report on the crime landscape in the Special Administrative Region (SAR) for the period between January 1 and September 30, 2023. Crime Overview:
During the stated timeframe, Macau reported a total of 9,653 criminal activities, showcasing a 31.7% increase compared to the same period last year. Of these, 716 cases were identified as gaming-related, marking a substantial 176% year-on-year increase. However, when compared to the same period in 2019, gaming-related crimes demonstrated a notable decrease of 55.2%.
Gaming-Related Crimes Analysis:
Fraud Cases: Among the gaming-related incidents, fraud took center stage with 155 cases, reflecting a significant 139% increase compared to the previous year.
Theft in Casinos: Instances of theft within casinos saw a staggering surge, reaching 129 cases and representing a remarkable 486% year-on-year increase.
Response to Money Exchange Gangs:
Wong addressed the growing concern of money exchange gangs, reporting a 230% year-on-year increase in police intercepts of 9,633 individuals associated with such groups. In response to the rise in illegal money exchange activities, authorities are considering criminalization measures to enhance penalties and deter such offenses. The Judiciary Police has submitted a proposal for the feasibility of criminalizing illegal money exchange activities, aiming to elevate law enforcement efficiency.
Telecommunication Network Fraud:
Aside from gaming-related issues, Wong highlighted a concerning trend in telecommunication network fraud, particularly cases related to concert tickets. The first three quarters of 2023 witnessed a substantial increase, with 135 reported cases. Wong attributed this surge to lifestyle changes and increased internet reliance, emphasizing that telecommunication network fraud has become the fastest-growing type of crime in Macau and neighboring regions.
