Workers’ Unions Rally Behind Proposed Richmond Casino for Job Opportunities

As Richmond, Virginia, gears up for a crucial second referendum on the establishment of a land-based casino in the region, three prominent workers’ unions express their support for the project. The Richmond Building and Construction Trades Council, along with Unite Here 23 & 25, laud the potential job opportunities and career prospects that a casino could bring to the area if approved by voters in November.

Union Support for Economic Growth:
Emphasizing the transformative impact of the proposed casino, Paul Schwalb, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of Unite Here Local 25, applauds the demonstrated commitment of Urban One and Churchill Downs to Richmond. He highlights the prospect of over 1,300 family-sustaining jobs during construction and upon the casino’s operational launch.

Schwalb states, “This half-billion-dollar project will mean opportunities for incumbent area construction workers and for city residents desiring to enter an apprenticeship and start their careers.” He underscores the importance of supporting the project, which, in turn, supports the members of the unions by providing middle-class careers with competitive wages, health insurance, and secure retirement.

Revisiting the Casino Referendum:
Authorized by a court order, Richmond is set to reintroduce the $562 million casino proposal on the ballot on November 7. The previous referendum in November 2021 narrowly rejected the proposal. Urban One’s comprehensive plan includes a 90,000 square foot gaming floor with 2,000 slot machines, over 100 gaming tables, a competition poker room, and a sportsbook. Additionally, a hotel offering 250 4-Star, AAA 4-Diamond luxury rooms, with potential expansion to 600, is part of the proposed development.

Mayor’s Enthusiasm for Economic Impact:
Mayor Levar Stoney expresses excitement about the potential approval of the Richmond destination resort and entertainment venue. He anticipates the creation of 1,300 well-paying jobs and an estimated annual revenue of $30 million to address critical community needs. Stoney envisions the casino as a catalyst for changing the economic trajectory of Southside, contributing to the city’s record development and growth.

The union-backed support for the casino project underscores its significance not only as an entertainment venue but as a driver of economic growth and job creation. As Richmond residents prepare to cast their votes in the upcoming referendum, the unions advocate for a positive change in the region’s economic landscape.
