Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM) in March spearheaded by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) brings into focus the pervasive issue of problem gambling across the United States. With the overarching theme ‘Every Story Matters,’ this campaign endeavors to not only highlight the prevalence of problem gambling but also advocates for prevention, treatment, and recovery services. Through collaborative efforts from various stakeholders, PGAM aims to mitigate the social and economic costs associated with problem gambling, offering support and resources to affected individuals and their families.
Scope of Problem Gambling
Problem gambling affects approximately 9 million American adults, imposing a significant national social cost estimated at $14 billion annually. Despite its widespread impact, there is a notable absence of a dedicated federal agency tasked with addressing problem gambling. Furthermore, federal funding for related treatment and research remains insufficient, underscoring the urgent need for concerted efforts in this domain.
NCPG’s Endeavors
Under the leadership of Keith Whyte, Executive Director of NCPG, the organization plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about problem gambling and advocating for support services. Whyte emphasizes the importance of fostering an open dialogue to destigmatize gambling addiction and facilitate access to treatment and recovery resources. Despite the prevalence of the issue, research indicates that less than 50% of Americans are aware of where to seek help for problem gambling, highlighting the necessity for heightened awareness efforts.
Collaborative Approach
PGAM brings together a diverse array of stakeholders, including NCPG State Affiliates, public health organizations, advocacy groups, professional sports leagues, and gambling operators. Through collaborative initiatives such as events, workshops, and awareness campaigns, these entities strive to reach diverse audiences and promote awareness about problem gambling prevention, treatment, and recovery services.
Theme: ‘Every Story Matters’
The theme for PGAM 2024, ‘Every Story Matters,’ underscores the significance of individual experiences in the context of problem gambling. By sharing personal narratives, PGAM aims to reduce stigma surrounding gambling addiction and encourage affected individuals to seek help. This theme serves as a reminder that every individual impacted by problem gambling has a unique story, deserving of attention and support.
Innovative Partnerships
In December 2023, NCPG forged a partnership with SG:certified to enhance player protection in online gambling through the evaluation process of the Internet Compliance Assessment Program (iCAP). This initiative reflects a proactive approach to address emerging challenges in the digital gambling landscape, ensuring the safety and well-being of online players.
Supporting Prevention and Mitigation Efforts
NCPG awarded Fall 2023 Agility Grants totaling $176,000 to five non-profit organizations, furthering prevention and mitigation efforts across the United States. These grants signify a commitment to supporting grassroots initiatives aimed at addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by problem gambling and promoting community-based solutions.
Problem Gambling Awareness Month serves as a crucial platform to shed light on the issue of problem gambling and advocate for comprehensive support services. Through collaborative efforts and innovative partnerships, stakeholders endeavor to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and provide resources for prevention, treatment, and recovery. With the theme ‘Every Story Matters,’ PGAM 2024 emphasizes the importance of individual experiences in shaping the discourse surrounding problem gambling, fostering empathy, understanding, and support for those affected. By working together, communities can address this growing public health concern and pave the way for a brighter, more resilient future.
