In April 2020, Betfair lodged an appeal with the Administrative Court in a bid to challenge the initial fine. However, their efforts proved futile as the court upheld the regulator’s decision. Undeterred, Betfair persisted and took their case to the Court of Appeal in June 2021. This time, their appeal bore fruit, resulting in a reduction of the fine from SEK$5.5m to SEK$4.5m.
Despite this partial victory, Betfair’s legal woes were far from over. Their most recent appeal to the Administrative Court met with rejection, with the court affirming the regulator’s decision and ordering Betfair to pay the amended fine. Thus, Betfair finds itself compelled to comply with the regulatory ruling.
SkillOnNet and Betway’s Appeals
SkillOnNet and Betway also found themselves embroiled in legal battles with the Swedish gambling regulator, facing fines for separate violations of gambling laws. SkillOnNet was penalized for offering prohibited bonuses and running a lottery that contravened the terms of its gambling license, resulting in a fine of SEK$14m. On the other hand, Betway faced repercussions for providing unauthorized bonuses, leading to a fine of SEK$4.7m.
Similar to Betfair, both SkillOnNet and Betway opted to challenge the fines imposed on them through the appeals process. However, their efforts proved unsuccessful, as their appeals were rejected by the courts. Consequently, SkillOnNet and Betway were issued warnings and instructed to pay the fines levied against them, underscoring the stringent enforcement of gambling regulations in Sweden.
NGG Nordic’s Appeal and Reduction in Fine
NGG Nordic, a subsidiary of Betsson, also found itself at odds with the Swedish Gambling Authority, facing a substantial fine of SEK$19m for unspecified infringements of gambling regulations. In January 2022, NGG Nordic pursued an appeal in an attempt to contest the severity of the penalty imposed upon them. While their appeal did not succeed in overturning the fine entirely, NGG Nordic did manage to secure a reduction in the amount, with the Swedish Gambling Authority revising the fine downward to SEK$14m.
