The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) has unanimously granted a license to SC Gaming OpCo to establish a new land-based casino in Centre County’s College Township. The licensing process began in September 2020 when SC owner Ira Lubert secured rights through a successful bid of $10,000,101 during a Category 4 auction held by the board. This recent development culminates a thorough evaluation and public input process.
New Casino Venture:
The approved casino project is set to occupy a 94,000 square foot area within the former Macy’s Department Store location at the Nittany Mall on College Avenue. Operated by Bally’s Corporation, the venue will be transformed into a dynamic entertainment destination, offering a range of gaming and leisure experiences.
Stringent Evaluation Process:
The PGCB conducted an exhaustive background investigation into the application, supplemented by feedback from various stakeholders, including citizens, community groups, and public officials. Transformation of Nittany Mall:
Bally’s Corporation’s plans for the Nittany Mall include an extensive renovation to revitalize the space. With a proposed investment of $123 million, the vacant shopping mall will be converted into a vibrant casino venue. The establishment is set to feature 750 slot machines, 30 table games, and a sports betting facility. In addition, a sport-themed restaurant with live entertainment space will contribute to the venue’s allure.
Proximity to Penn State Campus:
Situated less than four miles from the Penn State campus in University Park, the casino’s strategic location aims to cater to a diverse audience, including local residents and university students. Timeline and Licensing:
While SC Gaming has not specified an opening date, the project’s construction is anticipated to take approximately 12 months once initiated. The Category 4 Slot Machine License granted to the entity permits the operation of 300 to 750 slot machines. Additionally, the entity has the option to seek permission to operate up to 30 table games for an additional fee, with the possibility of expanding this offering after the first year of operation.
