The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has taken action against Ontario Gaming GTA, the operator of Casino Woodbine in Toronto, by serving a notice of a monetary penalty totaling $80,000. This decision follows allegations of cheating and dealer collusion that surfaced in April, when five individuals were charged by the Ontario Provincial Police Investigation and Enforcement Bureau (IEB), a part of the AGCO. The charges stemmed from suspicions that an electronic craps dealer was involved in collusion with customers. In light of these allegations, AGCO’s Regulatory Compliance Branch conducted a compliance review and found that Casino Woodbine failed to detect or prevent the infraction.
AGCO’s Recent Enforcement Actions:
This penalty against Casino Woodbine is part of AGCO’s ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of the gaming industry in Ontario. In a recent enforcement action, AGCO imposed a CAD $100,000 penalty on Apollo Entertainment for its failure to meet responsible gambling requirements in Ontario. Additionally, two AGCO-registered Internet gaming operators faced fines totaling CA$30,000 for infractions related to standards for game integrity in Internet gaming.
Advertising and Marketing Restrictions in Internet Gaming:
AGCO has introduced notable changes in its regulatory framework for Internet gaming. The Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming have been updated to prohibit the use of athletes in advertising and marketing for online gambling in the province. Furthermore, the use of celebrities who may appeal to minors has also been restricted. These new regulations will come into effect on February 28, 2024.
