North Star Entertainment fined $7.2 million over customer protection and compliance failures

The Star Sydney has been fined AU$7.2 million after Australia’s financial crimes regulator found multiple breaches involving customer protection measures and anti-money laundering controls.

The penalty was issued by the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), which said the casino operator failed to meet several compliance obligations tied to high-risk customers and source-of-funds checks.

The latest action adds to the regulatory pressure already facing Star Entertainment Group, which has spent the past several years dealing with investigations, licence reviews and enforcement measures across its casino operations.

Failures linked to customer monitoring

AUSTRAC said the breaches involved weaknesses in customer due diligence and ongoing monitoring processes. According to the regulator, The Star Sydney did not adequately assess the source of funds and source of wealth of some customers despite indicators that warranted closer scrutiny. The findings also highlighted failures in maintaining appropriate controls for higher-risk patrons.

Regulators have increased their focus on customer protection and anti-money laundering programs across Australia’s casino sector following a series of inquiries into major operators.

Latest penalty adds to Star’s regulatory challenges

The AU$7.2 million fine comes as Star continues to work through remediation programs designed to address earlier compliance concerns. The company has already implemented a range of reforms, including enhanced customer screening procedures, stricter cash controls and expanded compliance oversight.

Regulators have been monitoring the effectiveness of those measures as part of broader efforts to improve governance standards within the business. The latest enforcement action suggests authorities remain focused on ensuring those changes are fully embedded across operations.

Australian casino sector remains under scrutiny

Australian regulators have increased enforcement activity against casino operators in recent years, placing greater emphasis on anti-money laundering controls, responsible gambling measures and customer risk assessments. The Star Sydney remains one of Australia’s largest casino properties, operating gaming, hospitality and entertainment facilities in New South Wales. The venue continues to operate while regulatory oversight and compliance reviews remain in place.

The AU$7.2 million penalty is one of the latest examples of regulators using financial sanctions to push casino operators toward stronger compliance standards and customer protection practices.
