Daniel Muñoz scored late as Colombia beat DR Congo 1-0 to secure a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32. The win gave Colombia six points from two Group K matches and left them top before their final game against Portugal.
Muñoz scored in the 76th minute after Colombia pushed for a goal for most of the match. DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi made several saves, but Colombia finally found a way past him in the second half.
Colombia control the match
Colombia had more possession from the start and created the better chances. Luis Díaz, James Rodríguez and Jhon Arias all tested DR Congo’s defence, but the team could not score before half-time. DR Congo defended deep and limited space around the penalty area. Their players stayed organised and looked to create chances through quick counter-attacks.
Colombia also had a goal ruled out for offside during the match. The decision kept the score level as DR Congo continued to resist pressure.
Mpasi keeps DR Congo level
Mpasi was important for DR Congo throughout the game. He stopped several shots from Colombia and helped his team stay level for much of the second half. Colombia continued to attack from wide areas and set pieces. The pressure increased as the game moved into the final 20 minutes.
DR Congo had fewer chances but still caused problems in attack. Yoane Wissa and Cédric Bakambu were involved in their attacking moves, but Colombia stopped the attacks.
Muñoz finds the winner
The match changed in the 76th minute when Muñoz scored Colombia’s winning goal. The right-back found space in the box and finished after Colombia worked the ball forward.
Muñoz had also scored in Colombia’s opening 3-1 win over Uzbekistan. His second goal of the tournament made him one of Colombia’s key players in Group K. Colombia defended their lead through the final minutes. Vargas made a late save to keep Colombia ahead.
Portugal match decides top spot
Colombia have six points after two matches and are already through to the Round of 32. Portugal have four points after beating Uzbekistan 5-0, while DR Congo have one point.
Colombia will play Portugal in their final Group K match. DR Congo face Uzbekistan and need a win to keep their qualification hopes alive.
