Algeria beat Jordan 2-1 in their World Cup Group J match, ending Jordan’s hopes of reaching the Round of 32. The result gave Algeria their first World Cup win since 2014 and kept their own qualification chances alive.

Jordan took the lead in the first half through Nizar Al-Rashdan, but Algeria responded after the break with two goals from corner situations. Nadhir Benbouali equalised before Amine Gouiri scored the winner late in the match.

Jordan take first-half lead

Jordan started with more urgency after losing their opening match against Austria. The team defended with discipline and looked to use quick attacks when Algeria pushed forward. Al-Rashdan gave Jordan the lead in the 36th minute. His goal put Algeria under pressure and gave Jordan a chance to earn their first point at a World Cup.

Algeria had more possession but found it difficult to create clear chances before half-time. Riyad Mahrez returned to the starting line-up as captain, but Jordan defended well for much of the match.

Corners change the match

Algeria improved after the break and began to create more pressure around Jordan’s penalty area. Their comeback started from a Mahrez corner, which substitute Benbouali headed in to make it 1-1.

The equaliser changed the flow of the match. Jordan had to defend deeper, while Algeria kept attacking from corners and the wings. Gouiri then scored the decisive goal during a goalmouth scramble. The finish completed Algeria’s recovery and ended Jordan’s chances of getting back into the match.

Jordan leave tournament early

The defeat left Jordan with no points from two Group J matches. Their first World Cup campaign will end after the final group game against Argentina.

Jordan had shown positive moments in both matches but could not turn them into points. The team lost 3-1 to Austria in its opening game before the late defeat against Algeria.

The World Cup now has 48 teams, and some third-placed teams can reach the next round. Jordan can no longer finish in one of those places.

Algeria face Austria next

Algeria moved level with Austria on three points after two matches. Argentina lead Group J with six points and have already secured a place in the Round of 32.

Algeria will face Austria in their final group game, with second place still open. The match will decide whether Algeria qualify directly or need other results to help them reach the knockout stage.
