WSOP: Warner Brothers Discovery lands European TV rights

WSOP Euro

In the words of WSOP CEO Ty Stewart, they’re putting the “World” back in the World Series of Poker. WSOP and Warner Brothers Discovery agreed to a three-year deal that will bring the WSOP Main Event to Europe, Asia, and Latin America through Eurosport, TNT Sports, Space, and HBO Max.

This is the first time that the World Series of Poker will be broadcast on mainstream television outside the United States.

“Warner Bros. Discovery’s unmatched global reach and premium sports platforms provide the perfect stage for the World Series of Poker to connect with millions of new and existing fans around the world,” WBD Senior Vice President of Sports Rights Acquisitions and Syndication Trojan Paillot said.

“For the first time, WBD will bring the WSOP, the premier event in poker, to viewers across Europe, Asia, and Latin America, expanding its global footprint and bringing the excitement, drama, and prestige of poker’s biggest stage to audiences everywhere.”

WSOP CEO Ty Stewart added, “To truly grow the game, you need a broadcast stage that matches the stakes. We are incredibly proud to partner with Warner Bros. Discovery to showcase the world’s biggest prize-money competition to mainstream audiences worldwide. Together, we are firmly putting the ‘World’ back in the World Series of Poker.”

Broadcast details

So far, on Eurosport in Europe and Asia, as well as TNT Sports in the UK and Ireland, the agreement states that six 45-minute highlight programs will run during the WSOP Main Event from July 2-13. Fans will also be able to access these shows via the HBO Max streaming service across the whole of Europe.

In addition, Eurosport in Europe and Asia and TNT Sports in the UK and Ireland will broadcast the final table live from August 3-5.

This comes after the WSOP announced back in March that ESPN would broadcast the WSOP Main Event live from July 2nd to August 5th, five years after ESPN and WSOP broke up a 19-year partnership. The WSOP had been on CBS Sports Network for the past five years, though coverage was quite limited compared to what’s being delivered on ESPN this year.

ESPN will be delivering around 100 hours of original WSOP programming, with a minimum of six hours of daily coverage. Creators of the popular “Manningcast” football broadcast, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, have promised to “apply its signature storytelling lens to the poker table.”

Partly due to the World Cup, the WSOP Main Event will play down to nine players on July 13th before going on a 20-day break. They will resume on August 3 and play down to a winner on August 5. The three-day finale will be broadcast live on ESPN.

This will be the first time there’s been a delay in the Main Event final table since the November Nine era, which started in 2008 and ran for nine years, building up four months of hype before the players came back to Vegas to play out the tournament.
