Belgium played more than 25 minutes with 10 men as they drew 0-0 with Iran in a tense 2026 FIFA World Cup Group G match in Los Angeles. Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand made seven saves to secure a point and keep the group open before the final round.
The result left Belgium on two points from two matches, while Iran also moved to two points. Egypt lead Group G with four points after beating New Zealand 3-1.
Belgium create chances but cannot score
Belgium had more of the ball and created several good chances, but could not beat Beiranvand. Kevin De Bruyne helped create openings, while Maxim De Cuyper and Romelu Lukaku both came close.
Beiranvand made his biggest save shortly before the hour mark. He stopped De Cuyper from close range after Belgium had worked the ball into the Iran penalty area.
Belgium have now played two group matches without scoring a goal themselves. Their only goal so far came through a Mohamed Hany own goal in the 1-1 draw with Egypt.
Iran see Taremi goal ruled out
Iran also had a major chance in the first half when Mehdi Taremi finished past Thibaut Courtois. The goal was ruled out after a VAR review found Taremi offside. The decision kept the score level, but Iran continued to threaten through quick breaks. Taremi and Mohammad Mohebbi caused problems for Belgium’s defence when Iran moved forward.
Iran defended well for long periods and limited Belgium’s space around the box. The team then had to manage the final stages after Belgium lost a defender.
Ngoy sent off for Belgium
Belgium defender Nathan Ngoy was shown a straight red card in the 66th minute. He brought down Taremi after the Iran forward intercepted a poor attempted pass and ran through on goal.
The dismissal gave Iran an extra player for the final part of the match. Belgium still pushed for a winner but had to be more careful after losing Ngoy. Iran could not find a late goal either. Courtois made important saves to prevent Iran from taking all three points.
Final group matches decide progress
Egypt lead the group on four points, while Belgium and Iran have two each. New Zealand have one point and still remain in contention before the final matches.
Belgium will play New Zealand in their final Group G match. Iran will play Egypt, with both teams still able to reach the Round of 32.
