Sun International has appointed Tumelo Mokoena as responsible gambling manager. The move strengthens the group’s player protection and safer gambling work across its casino, hospitality and betting operations.

Mokoena joins the company with experience in responsible gambling advocacy and public communication. Her appointment comes as South African operators face more scrutiny over safer gambling, digital betting growth and customer protection.

Role focuses on safer play

The responsible gambling manager role will focus on safer play, ethical engagement and long-term sustainability. It gives Sun International a dedicated leadership position for responsible gambling across the business.

The work is expected to cover player protection messaging, internal awareness, safer gambling controls and engagement with industry stakeholders. It also supports the group’s wider compliance responsibilities in a market where gambling harm remains a public policy issue.

Sun International operates major South African gaming and hospitality assets, including Sun City, GrandWest, Time Square and Carnival City. The group also operates SunBet, giving its responsible gambling work both land-based and digital relevance.

Mokoena brings gambling harm experience

Mokoena previously worked with the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, where she focused on advocacy and communications. That background gives her experience in public education, awareness campaigns and support messaging linked to gambling harm.

Her work has included responsible gambling engagement across media, industry and community platforms. That experience fits a role where communication is central to making safer gambling tools visible and understandable for players.

Responsible gambling roles are becoming more important as operators expand beyond traditional casino floors. Online betting, mobile products and casino-style digital games give companies more customer data, but also bring more responsibility around early risk signs.

South Africa keeps focus on gambling harm

South Africa has a long-running responsible gambling framework through the National Responsible Gambling Programme. The programme offers counselling, education and support services for people affected by gambling problems.

Operators are also expected to promote age limits, responsible play messages and access to help services. Sun International’s appointment adds another responsible gambling role within the group.

Digital growth adds pressure

SunBet has become a larger part of Sun International’s growth strategy, especially as online sports betting and casino-style products expand in South Africa. Digital channels can make gambling easier to access, which increases the need for clear controls and customer monitoring.

Mokoena’s appointment comes at a time when safer gambling is no longer treated only as a compliance function. For large operators, it is now part of brand trust, regulatory stability and long-term market growth.
