Luis Díaz scored and assisted as Colombia opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The result put Colombia top of Group K after Portugal and DR Congo drew 1-1 earlier in the group.

Colombia had to break down a disciplined Uzbekistan side playing in its first World Cup match. Daniel Muñoz gave Colombia the lead before Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored Uzbekistan’s first World Cup goal, but Díaz and Jaminton Campaz settled the match.

Muñoz opens scoring for Colombia

Colombia controlled much of the first half and used Díaz’s pace on the left to stretch Uzbekistan’s defence. Colombia scored in the 40th minute when Díaz set up Muñoz to finish.

Uzbekistan defended deep for long periods and tried to slow Colombia’s passing rhythm. James Rodríguez had a quiet game as Uzbekistan closed space in central areas. Colombia still created enough chances to lead before the break. Their pressure finally paid off when Díaz found Muñoz, giving Néstor Lorenzo’s side a deserved half-time advantage.

Uzbekistan make World Cup history

Uzbekistan improved after half-time and began to play with more confidence. The equaliser came in the 60th minute after Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas saved the first effort but could not stop the rebound.

Fayzullaev reacted quickly and scored to make it 1-1. The goal was Uzbekistan’s first at a men’s World Cup and gave their supporters a historic moment in the country’s tournament debut. The equaliser briefly changed the match. Uzbekistan pushed forward more directly, and Colombia had to respond after losing control for part of the second half.

Díaz restores Colombia lead

Colombia answered quickly through Díaz, who finished with composure to make it 2-1. His goal came only minutes after Uzbekistan’s equaliser and shifted control back toward Colombia. Díaz was the most dangerous player on the pitch, combining direct running with decisive end product. His assist for Muñoz and goal after the break gave Colombia the attacking edge they needed.

Campaz then completed the win in added time. The substitute headed in from Cucho Hernández’s assist to give Colombia a two-goal margin.

Group K battle begins

Colombia’s win puts them ahead in Group K after the opening round. Portugal and DR Congo both have one point after their draw, while Uzbekistan are still looking for their first point. Colombia will next face DR Congo in Guadalajara. Uzbekistan will play Portugal, needing a stronger result after losing on their World Cup debut.
