Mexico take control in Round of 32
Mexico built a two-goal lead and Ecuador could not recover. The result gave Mexico a place among the final 16 teams. Mexico have now won every match in the tournament. The win came after Mexico finished ahead of South Africa, South Korea and Czechia in Group A.
The host nation remains in the competition as the knockout stage moves toward the quarter-finals. Mexico will now prepare for its next match.
Ecuador’s campaign ends
Ecuador reached the Round of 32 after progressing from Group E. The team had played Germany, Ivory Coast and Curaçao during the group stage.
Mexico’s defence stopped Ecuador from scoring in the knockout match. Ecuador allowed two goals and did not come back. The defeat ends Ecuador’s World Cup run before the Round of 16. Mexico will have several days to prepare for the next round.
England or DR Congo await
Mexico will face either England or DR Congo in the Round of 16 on July 5. England and DR Congo play their Round of 32 match on July 1.
The winner will join Mexico in the next round. Their match will decide one of the two places in the July 11 quarter-final.
Brazil and Norway will play in the other Round of 16 match on Mexico’s side of the draw. Mexico’s opponent will be confirmed after England face DR Congo.
Route to the semi-finals
Mexico need two more wins to reach the semi-finals. The team’s Round of 16 match will be its next test after the win over Ecuador.
A quarter-final victory would put Mexico into the final four. The World Cup semi-finals are scheduled for July 14 and July 15, with the final on July 19. Mexico joined Paraguay, Morocco, Canada, Brazil, Norway and France in the Round of 16. More places will be decided as the remaining Round of 32 matches are completed.
