Yoane Wissa scored Congo DR’s first World Cup goal as they held Portugal to a 1-1 draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group K opener in Houston. The result gave Congo DR their first ever point at the men’s World Cup.
Portugal took an early lead through João Neves, but Congo DR stayed in the match and equalised before half-time. Wissa’s goal turned a difficult start into a landmark result for a team playing at the tournament for the first time since 1974.
Portugal start fast in Houston
Portugal began with control and scored after six minutes. Pedro Neto delivered the cross, and Neves headed in to give Roberto Martínez’s side the lead. The early goal gave Portugal a strong start. Cristiano Ronaldo started his sixth World Cup, but Congo DR defended tightly and gave him little room near goal.
Portugal had more of the ball for long periods but struggled to create clear chances. Congo DR stayed compact, closed central passing lanes and waited for moments to counter.
Wissa scores before half-time
Congo DR improved after falling behind early. Their equaliser came in first-half stoppage time when Wissa found space and scored to make it 1-1. The goal was Congo DR’s first at a men’s World Cup. The country previously appeared as Zaire in 1974, losing all three matches and failing to score.
Wissa’s finish gave Congo DR confidence before the break. It also changed the mood of the match, with Portugal losing some of the control they had shown in the opening stages.
Congo DR hold firm after break
Portugal pushed for a winner in the second half, but Congo DR stayed organised and defended with discipline. Ronaldo had chances but could not turn them into a goal.
Congo DR also carried a threat on counter-attacks. Their forward runs forced Portugal to stay cautious, even as the European side tried to increase pressure.
Portugal finished with frustration after failing to build on their early lead. Congo DR, meanwhile, left Houston with one of the most important results in their football history.
Group K starts close
The draw leaves Portugal and Congo DR on one point each after their first Group K match. Colombia later beat Uzbekistan 3-1, putting them top of the group after the opening round. Congo DR will next face Colombia in Guadalajara. Portugal will play Uzbekistan in Houston, where they will need a win to regain control of their group campaign.
