Spain beat Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to reach the last 16. The result set up a Round of 16 match against Portugal on July 6.
Austria could not keep up with Spain during the match. Spain scored three times without conceding and moved through the first knockout round with a clear win.
Spain take control early
Spain controlled possession and created the better chances against Austria. The team built its lead during the match and did not allow Austria back into the contest.
The result continued Spain’s strong start to the tournament. Spain had reached the Round of 32 after finishing top of Group H ahead of Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
Spain are among the highest-scoring teams in the tournament after the 3-0 win. The clean sheet also gave the team confidence before a tougher test against Portugal.
Austria’s World Cup ends
Austria reached the knockout stage after progressing from Group J. The team finished behind Argentina and ahead of Algeria and Jordan to earn a place in the Round of 32.
Austria had been competitive during the group stage but could not find a way through Spain’s defence. The team conceded three goals and left the tournament without scoring in the knockout round.
The defeat ends Austria’s first World Cup campaign since 1998. Austria’s best World Cup result remains its third-place finish on home soil in 1954.
Austria will now turn its attention to future international fixtures. The team had made progress in recent European competitions but could not extend its World Cup run beyond the opening knockout round.
Portugal wait in the last 16
Spain will face Portugal in the Round of 16 on July 6. Portugal reached this stage after beating Croatia 2-1, with Gonçalo Ramos scoring near the end. The team that wins will play in a quarter-final on July 10. The other Round of 16 game on this side of the draw is United States against Belgium.
Spain and Portugal have met in several major tournaments. Their last World Cup match ended 3-3 in the 2018 group stage, when Cristiano Ronaldo scored three goals for Portugal.
Spain chase another World Cup title
Spain won its only World Cup in 2010 after beating the Netherlands in the final. The team entered the 2026 tournament looking to return to the later stages after recent early exits.
The win over Austria gives Spain a place among the final 16 teams. Portugal will provide a major test as two European sides meet for a place in the quarter-finals.
